History of Colonics
Colon irrigation is a procedure that was developed based on the concept of auto intoxication. Auto-intoxication is an ancient theory based on the belief that toxins originating in the intestine can enter the circulation and poison the body (Richards, McMillan, Mein and Nelson:2). Colonics were viewed as a gentler alternative to the more extreme treatments of surgery and purgatives. During the 1800's and early 1900's was when colon irrigation returned to popular culture and was very popular as a treatment prescribed by renouned physicians as an alternative to laxative pills and their dangers. In the mid 1900's as the era of drug therapy over physical therapy began to expand the treatment of the body by way of the colon slipped from popular consciousness and was offered only at exclusive spas and healing centers.
As the world entered the information age and was exposed to a wide range of information, a new level of personal and physical awareness emerged as well. This new awareness brought with it a greater understanding of the adverse effects that drug dependency, chemically refined and altered foods and lack of activity can have on the body. As a result a renewed appreciation for natural healing was sparked, in the later part of the 20th century and the ongoing 21th century. Colon irrigation and an understanding of its principles and benefits, experienced a rebirth and continues to provide those seeking, a natural healing experience to compliment a healthier lifestyle.
